Vacation 2008 - June 11 - South Dakota

Our vacation started on June 10, but it was a driving day, so we didn't see much.  The kids played video games and watched movies until we checked into our hotel in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The next morning, we drove on toward Rapid City, South Dakota, and we saw a lot of cool stuff along the way.  First we we went through the Badlands.  Then we stopped at Wall Drugs, a gift shop/general store that's practically a town in itself.  The kids had fun posing with statues of cowboys and saloon girls.  Then we reached our destination for the night, Rapid City, South Dakota.  We checked into our hotel, and then we went to see the Crazy Horse Memorial and Mt. Rushmore.

Climbing in the Badlands

After being couped up in the car all the previous day, the kids were ecstatic to be able to do some heavy-duty climbing in The Badlands.

The Famous
Wall Drug Store

Driving through South Dakota, we passed dozens of signs over hundreds of miles advertising "Wall Drug Store." By the time we got to the exit, we just had to stop and check it out. Wall Drug Store was founded in the 1930's in a tiny, prairie town, and has been expanded into the kitschiest souvenir store/mall we have ever seen. It takes up all of Main Street and is a must-see for anyone traveling I-90 through South Dakota. Below are photos of some of the road signs and some of the fun shots we got while we were there.

Ben's first souvenir of the trip - a "coonskin" cap he bought at a gift store in The Badlands.
